THE LEGAL FORECAST ARE PROUD TO PRESENT
DISRUPTING LAW NATIONAL
in 2019… we are going bigger & better than ever
Following from last year’s huge success in QLD and WA, The Legal Forecast will be running Disrupting Law in QLD, VIC, SA, NSW (9 - 11th August) and WA (16 - 18th August)! So join forward thinking lawyers, technologists, students and innovators to learn new skills, create a project and pitch a legal-tech idea to innovate the legal industry.
What is Disrupting Law?
Disrupting Law is a unique 54-hour hackathon for tertiary students focused on finding new opportunities in the legal industry. Disrupting Law allows people to join forces in creating solutions through fast paced, creative and interdisciplinary problem solving. Serving as a platform for idea generation, relationship building and skill progression, participants will be energised and geared up to tackle the next challenge in the legal industry.
Students from a range of faculties and universities come together over a weekend to search for the next best idea to advance legal practice in a novel way. In a process that is deliberately randomised to spark new connections and friendships, student teams are partnered with mentoring law firms. One contestant in 2017 described the process as “strangers to founders in 54 hours”.
HOW WILL THE WEEKEND RUN?
On the Friday evening, all contestants will gather at their host university for an opening celebration and we will allocate student teams to their mentoring firms.
Students and their law firm mentors will spend 54 hours designing an idea to “disrupt law”. All teams will pitch to a panel of experienced judges and the public on Sunday evening for a range of opportunities, awards and prizes. We will provide you with food and drink for the entirety of the weekend.
You must be available for the whole weekend, and while we will try to cater for your requests to join a team with friends, part of the fun (and the challenge) is that we randomise teams so you meet new and interesting people with perspectives from other faculties. All tertiary students are welcome to participate, no matter their university or degree. As you must hit the ground running, we particularly encourage those with law and technology backgrounds to apply (but an interest and a measure of enthusiasm will suffice!).
So what’s the catch?
This year, we are mixing things up a bit. As we are running Disrupting Law nationally, the overall winners from each state will compete in the Disrupting Law National pitch competition which will take place over Skype not long after their State’s Disrupting Law event has taken place. This means you have the chance to win some awesome prizes and show off, nationally, just how innovative you can be.
This event is an unparalleled opportunity to work closely with lawyers, entrepreneurs, technology professionals, management consultants and others from industry to practice creative problem solving, learn about the business and practice of law, and hone your pitching skills.
